currently crushing: mixed media.......

Many moons ago when I was but a wee child, school art classes were infused with old magazines and newspapers, dried pasta, cardboard, pipe cleaners, string and various odds and ends. From this crazy collection we would create masterpieces that only our parents could love. Sticking something on top of the other, mashing them together and creating something glorious. Which is exactly what the master of mixing it up, Central Saint Martins graduate Michael van der Ham does. Obviously with much nicer things then dried pasta and pipe cleaners, things like silk, lace and cashmere.
See below

The man has some serious collaging skills, mixing up silk and cashmere and lace to brilliant effect.
Erdem and Victoria Beckham have also gotten on the mixing it up bandwagon with some super cool threads.

I'm quite partial to the idea of mixing fabrics and textures to create something a little different.
Fashion is about breaking rules right?
So why can't we wear silk with tweed, cashmere with denim, or jersey with velvet.
I'm not putting a question mark at the end of that sentence because we can!
I say lets pull out our sequins and silks and our leather and tweed, throw it all on and strut straight out the front door, and hey even if the rest of the world hates it at least we'll always have our folks,
they HAVE to love what we do!

this just in: now that's a statement.......

Let me tell you a little story.
It starts with a young woman, ok it's me, doing a little shopping, killing time with a friend before dinner,
when I spot this AMAZING necklace, glorious in it's extravagance
and colour and sparkle. But I showed incredible restraint and didn't buy the necklace!

A few more weeks pass, in that time I have told just about everyone I know about the necklace and how spectacular it is. Finally I decided, to hell with it, I'm gonna get me that necklace!
I jumped online, while simultaneously whipping out the trusty credit card,
and much to my horror I find the necklace is sold out online!!
What's a girl to do but head to the land of the sold out, discontinued line and seasons past.......Ebay!
Miraculously, in a turn of events clearly planned by the fashion gods themselves, I found the necklace, in brand new condition, never worn! So I swooped in and snapped it up and sighed a very large sigh of relief.
A few days later the necklace lands in the mailbox and I am deliriously happy.

The End!

And what's the moral of this story dear readers, if you find something that you love,
and not just kind of fond of love, but real all encompassing love then you NEED to get it!
Lest you find yourself in the same situation as me!

In the interest of good storytelling here is the necklace at the centre of this drama.

currently crushing: bam! pow!........

Vintage Batman and Robin, does it get any better?
That was a rhetorical questions folks, I just know it can't.
I seriously wish life came with such colourful shots of BAM! and POW! and KERPLASH!, tell me that wouldn't make doing whatever it is you have to do sooooo much easier and just more fun, and we love our fun over here.

Which brings me to my current crush/obsession/desire to own.......
Phillip Lim is the shit right now, his graphic prints are amazingly incredibly awesome!!!

And while Lim's prints are inspired by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein and not Batman and Robin, I personally like my bam's and pow's to be delivered accompanied by a grey bodysuit and a black cape and a sidekick in forest green short shorts of course, you know cause we're all about fun!!
And what is more fun than a bodysuit and cape?? Or a sidekick in short shorts??
(another two rhetorical questions, the answer to both of which is nothing just FYI)
So BAM! KAPOW! SNAP!
Happy Sunday!!

mulberry goes wild..........

I just had to post these shots from the Mulberry AW12 campaign mainly because it reminds me so much of "Where the Wild Things Are" which is one of my favourite books ever.
I also loved the movie, which is odd because I generally love the book and hate the movies.
Anyway little off topic, back to the monsters, British photographer Tim Walker took these shots in an English forest with model Lindsey Wixson and they are just AMAZING!!!!!

I've always been a fan of Mulberry, their campaigns are generally a little left of centre and I really adore that, but this one has totally sealed the deal for me. I just want to throw out everything
I own and live the rest of my life in their seriously cool world!!

stories and memories.......

Today while doing my usual Bloglovin check, I read a post on Style by Kling about a new
Isabel Marant watch. It’s based on a watch that was owned by Marant’s father,
one that she still wears now, ten years after his passing.

It got me thinking about those pieces in our wardrobes that have stories, that bring back memories,
that are more then just a dress or a pair of shoes or in Marant’s case a watch.

I have a few of those things in my wardrobe, and whenever I wear them or even just pull them out,
I can feel that memory, I can imagine where they’ve been.

The bridesmaid dress I wore to my brother’s wedding last year, very happy memories!!

My vintage red heels, whenever I pull them out, I like to imagine who bought them,
why they did and where the shoes have been!!

A necklace handed down from my great grandmother is quite sentimental,
whenever I wear it I always think of her and of my family.
I take it away with me when I travel, so a little piece of my family comes with me.

I’m sure I’ll collect more of these pieces and I look forward to doing so,
and having a wardrobe full of stories and memories!!

Do you have any pieces like this in your wardrobe??

currently crushing......pia

Sometimes the most amazing things can happen when you least expect it.
That’s completely the way I feel about my recent discovery of Tony Bianco’s Pia.

There I was, just minding my own business and BAM!
The flat, knee high black boot I’ve been searching for for the best part of.......well
a really really really long time, just appears right in front of me!
Not literally right in front of me, on my iphone screen,
but still you're picking up what I’m putting down right??

Everytime I found a possible candidate, something was amiss.
The leather was shiny instead of matt,
the perfect boot but it was a heel,
it didn’t come in black,
wasn't real leather
.....and on and on and on.

But that search is over, finally!

I heart you Tony Bianco!!
